MixTent

This project is less an exhibition of completed work than an open invitation into an evolving exploration.

The MixTent is designed as a flexible, seasonal structure—somewhere between a small cabin, a pavilion, and a tent. It is intended to be assembled from a combination of new lumber and reclaimed materials, including windows, doors, hardware, and other salvaged construction elements. The design is meant to evolve as materials are found, rather than forcing every part into a rigid plan.

 

The structure will have:

 

  • a charred timber frame with exposed hardware
  • floating 4×4 posts mounted on concrete piers
  • a ventilated metal roof designed for passive cooling and future solar panels
  • reclaimed windows and doors
  • partially enclosed walls with fabric and screened openings
  • a floating loft
  • a combination of flagstone and earthen flooring
  • an emphasis on natural ventilation, adaptability, and craftsmanship

 

Construction has already begun with the site preparation and gravel base. Because of my schedule and budget, the project will likely move forward gradually over the coming months. I’m perfectly comfortable building it one thoughtful step at a time.

 

This sketch

The windows in this model /sketch, are 3' x 6'6" double hung, (that I might have).

It's 16' wide at the back, 14' to 16' in length, height 12' max.

The 3 corner posts are set to fit the windows or doors that will be used.

The loft hangs from the ceiling, and connects to the back wall.

MixTent is being explored as a structure with three interconnected purposes:

Seasonal shelter — a light-on-the-land space for camping and living close to nature.

Rapid housing — a simple, adaptable building system that can be assembled quickly for temporary or emergency needs.

A place for emergence — a gathering space for small groups to cultivate presence, expand imagination, deepen awareness, and explore creative relationships.
